Realistically, this is psyops to say such a thing. The very first questions to answer is why they’d go to the U.S.? How did they know that they should go there? Were they already observing humans, and if so how are their communications escaping our notice? They use different physics and electromagnetic spectrum? When you think this way, the next set of questions is why someone would want to convince you of this. What’s the goal?

After WII the US was racing ahead with nuclear weapons. They crashed a “kite” to give the US gov something else to ruminate over. In the 80s the US thanked them by striking a small scout craft emerging from the ocean (where some comfortably habitate, just like in Abyss) this fragment bomb warhead took them completely by surprise.
In all of their memories, while having braved the uncertainties of space, they had never ever been attacked before.
One of their oldest leaders from the “nomadic space tribe” which found Earth came to collect the still living crew. America tricked and trapped this one and coerced him “Ion” to do horrible things.
