Can't read the article, it's on a website that doesn't have good enough support for all browsers or settings.
But I do remember the way bananas were sprayed using a very light petroleum lubricant (not considered a "distillate") that was supposed to be able to make fruit flies "stick" to the plants, trapping them without there being any of the highly toxic insecticides used on so many other crops. I guess I would never know if they actually did add some insecticides to the banana spray oil before applying it though, on occasion.
I can confidently say you should probably not put bananas in the washing machine ;)
