The opposition to nuclear is also a game the fossil fuel industry is playing. They know that renewables have a very hard time with replacing coal/gas/oil, and that a successful transition to nuclear represents an existential threat to the fossil fuel industry.
The problem is that the technology for nuclear power is the same as the technology for nuclear weapons. Do you want every country to become a nuclear state?
If it means decoupling energy production from further destruction of our planet? Sure, why not? Even assuming that "the technology for nuclear power is the same as the technology for nuclear weapons" (which is patently and blatantly false), MAD seems to have prevented global nuclear annihilation for a good 50 years or so, and I don't see that changing any time soon.
