Dr. Frankenstein really wasn't that bad a guy. Mary Shelley consistently portrays him as a tragic character beset with guilt and grief for his experiments. He started out with the same natural longing many people have - to understand life and how it works. He lost his way, but he's quite a sympathetic character. You'd have to be a hard consequentialist to consider him unethical.
