You can't be with your child 100% of the time. They are spending significant time with others, e.g. in school. Those people you can't control.

Doomscrolling or porn is just too "appealing" to children, like sugar. Children don't have their minds fully developed to be able to say "no" to them.

If in school everybody has a smartphone and does doomscrolling, your children will do as well. Or they'll be ostracised.

A hangout for 11-16 year olds often seems to devolve into a bunch of kids all watching their own phones. It's really depressing to watch, though they do seem to play as well.

We have had several arguments about no social media and we're only 1 out of 6-ish years in to the too naïve to look after yourself on the internet phase, and the eldest already figured out how to download some chat app I'd never even heard of without permission.

Are you crazy? I use local trains daily and they are everything, but punctual. Also, S-Bahn? Worst service ever.

idk what to tell you except that your personal experience does not generalize, see https://www.deutschebahn.com/de/konzern/konzernprofil/zahlen...

the regional trains run by regional orgs rather than db get similar results, e.g. bwegt in baden württemberg or beg in bavaria

I'd definitely buy this book!

Munich-Mühldorf regional train. Once it forgot to stop at Markt Schwaben (it always stops there). Passangers had to wait 30 min for the train to go back at the next station. Not even an apology.

It takes time to zero out memory.

Culture changes, that’s true. However, “change” doesn’t normalize the far left/green initiatives.

CCC always has been explicit far left/green, looking at its history, as other people in here have mentioned.

I think it would be fair to say that the club as a whole has become more open about that, I think that's more owed to a lot of folks driving initiatives feeling like the walls are closing in on them though and I can't exactly fault them for that :)

> CCC always has been explicit far left/green, looking at its history, as other people in here have mentioned.

Yes, but what has shifted is "the left", to a point were it has basically been taken over for very specific agendas.

Is Fabrice Bellard on HN?

In the morning I finished figuring out how Vivotek cameras store private keys for AWS KVS streaming. They are encrypted on disk. Disassembling some executables I managed to reverse engineer the encryption keys. Apparently Vivotek things obscurity is security… With the encryption keys we can switch to a custom made solution, while reusing the same certificates as before.

In the morning I finished figuring out

how Vivotek cameras store private keys for AWS KVS streaming.
They are encrypted on disk.

Disassembling some executables I managed to reverse engineer the encryption keys.
Apparently Vivotek things obscurity is security…

With the encryption keys we can switch
to a custom made solution,

while reusing the same certificates as before.

You go back, Jack. Do it again.

World spinning round and round.

You're upset that an encrypted stream needs encryption keys? And that you need physical access, the binaries themselves, and reverse engineering tools to get them?

I think you'll be surprised to learn you can do the same thing to any program which encrypts data

No, I’m not upset. Private keys are necessary, that’s fine. Vivotek encrypts them additionaly, but stores the encryption keys right next to the encypted data.

One could use TPM chip to store the keys, rather than such useless obscure encryption, which looks secure, but it’s not.

Of course. But same quality h264 keyframe will not be much smaller than JPEG.

Setting to 1 FPS might not be enough. GOP or P frame setting needs to be adjusted to make every frame keyframe.

Why would you do that?

Nearly-static content is where you want even fewer keyframes than usual. In a situation like this you need them when the connection is interrupted and you reset things, and not much of anywhere else.

1 FPS with GOP 60 might just simply not play in some players.

You wouldn’t use 1fps in conjunction with GOP 60. The original article wanted exactly one key frame every 60 frames and the server drops all frames other than keyframes. I was pointing out that this is a roundabout way of achieving 1 fps.

I don’t disagree.

Is this based on experience? I can't think of a reason for a decoder to care.
